ARTIST STATEMENT
In a world obsessed with the future, I’ve found profound inspiration in the things that are old and storied. Through my travels to China, Italy and South America and visiting many museums along the way, I’ve grown a deep respect for the preservation and passing down of history, customs, folklore and heirlooms. These tales and artifacts are the fingerprints of a time gone by, moments that can never be felt nor relished in ever again.
I see myself as an archivist of forgotten history and through my art I seek to retell and re-imagine moments and narratives, people and places that are long gone. I particularly enjoy exploring folklore and legends through the creation of elaborate faux artifacts, reminiscent of art from different time periods in history - from vintage photographs to gold-leafed frescos to pyroglyphids on ancient papyrus. The objective of my art is to retell a forgotten story in a way that will invoke nostalgia and curiosity in the viewer.
As a Bahamian native, my art is largely influenced by the nature, colors, culture and aesthetics of quintessential island life. A signature in my work is the depiction of tropical flora and fauna which is an ode to my humble upbringing. Currently, my work is exclusively committed to exploring Bahamian history, culture and folklore - unearthing and restoring the factual and fictional stories encrusted in our West Indian-African-European identity.
